Welwyn, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

Spacious Edwardian house with large garden on a leafy lane yet only 30 mins from London on the train

Introducing

We are a British couple who lived in Sydney in the mid-1990s but have lived in or near London ever since. Our daughter is attending the University of Sydney this year, and we want to visit her at Christmas with our two boys -- aged 18 and 12. So we are seeking a house for approx 18 Dec - 4 January in the Sydney area. We would be happy with a simultaneous swap, if you want to be in the UK at Christmastime, or a non-simultaneous swap, if you want to come to the UK in late July/August (when we will be on our summer holiday).

About Our Home

Edwardian house built about 1906 in about half an acre of garden, 5 minute walk from Welwyn North station which has trains to London every 30 minutes, taking 30minutes or less. It's a comfortable house with many period features. Ground floor has entrance hall with wood-burning stove, reception room with fireplace and telly, dining room with gas fire and piano, office, eat-in kitchen with wood burning stove and all cooking appliances, large conservatory, back hall, laundry room, play room with additional telly and table football, shower room, garage. First floor has 3 bedrooms (master bedroom with a waterbed, 2 single bedrooms), 2 bathrooms, dressing room. Top floor has the guest bedroom with twin beds that can be made up as a king-sized bed, a single bedroom and a shower room. If you're here in the summer, play short tennis or badminton or croquet in the garden. There's also table tennis and a trampoline.

Our Location

The neighbourhood is quiet yet convenient for London by train, and to the A1(M) motorway (2 miles away). Short drive (2 miles) to Welwyn Garden City for shops, library, cinema, theatre etc. Welwyn Garden City is a 1920s & 30s planned town, of interest to architecture or town planning buffs. Welwyn village is about 1.5miles for 14th century pub, 18th century coaching inn, other pubs and restaurants, Norman church, Roman baths (remains). Hatfield House and some other grand country houses are nearby. St Albans with its cathedral and roman ruins is about 20 mins away by car. Cambridge is about 50mins on the train. From our house you can walk to 4 country pubs (2-3 miles) mostly across fields on public footpaths and bridleways. Borrow our bicycles to venture further afield -- I can recommend various circular routes of any length that will be almost entirely on country lanes and can take in as many good country pubs as you require! If you're really keen, I can recommend a lovely cycle route to Cambridge, about 37 miles, and get the train back. (My garage is like a bike shop -- about 8 bikes of various sizes plus a tandem.) Yet the house is only 5 mins to the station for a fast train to London (Kings Cross) in about 30 minutes.

We have a cat, who will require feeding but is fairly independent. We also have 4 hens who will lay you a couple of fresh eggs every day. Alternatively a neighbour can look after all animals! AIRPORTS: Heathrow Airport is about 40 minutes away by car/taxi except in peak hours, or 1.5 hours by train at any time. Gatwick Airport is best by train - about 1.25 hours with a change at St Pancras. Stansted airport is 40 minutes by car/taxi, and Luton airport 25-30 minutes.
